TFA Program

October 9th and 10th were very hectic. Immediately the next day of Shaunak's birthday party, they had a performance at TFA's annual program. As the kids are progressing, their assignments are getting challenging. Shoumik is doing very well and he seems have a natural flair for playing tabla. Shauank is not very behind. The competitive spirit in him, doesn't allow him to accept that he is still younger than his Dada, he wants to do equally well.

Shauank's birthday

Shaunak's birthday preparation is always very hectic and very demanding. We enjoy listening to his plans and fulfilling those. He is so much full of energy and innovativeness. He keeps coming with new ideas of how to celebrate his birthday. It really gives lot of joy to be part of that, even if it is very tiring. Shaunak started preparing or rather thinking about his birthday almost 2 months back. He actually wrote on one paper that he wanted to play soccer game during his birthday party. Every week, there would be some addition.

One major demand came up one month before the birthday. He wanted to play treasure hunt. Hmm.. now that needs some planning and thinking. I was trying to avoid that. But this time, Shoumik came forward and made it look so easy. He thought of all the places, he thought of punch lines and all the details. I had no alternative but to go with them.

We also enjoyed Shoumik's big brotherly help. He helped in almost everything. He even conducted the game on his own. That was so nice to watch, it was a great moment to watch grown-up Shoumik.

Visit to Skygarden on top of Marina Bay Sands hotel

As a part of kid's semester break, we had a family outing. We visited the skygarden on top of the Marina Bay Sands Hotel. We used to watch while this huge infrastructure was being raised from ground to the top level. The scene of massive 70,000 ton iron structure being lifted and placed on the top of the hotel roof at the height of 200m was fascinating. We always had a curiosity to go and watch it. On completion, it looks wonderful. It is one of the iconic buildings in Singapore now.

There are so many fascinating things about this skygarden.
It is longer than Eiffel tower, if it was laid down
It can accommodate 4 and half A380s
It is equal to 3 football grounds
It has 150m long swimming pool....

The view from the top was fascinating. Take a look at the pictures.

This was an important milestone for Shoumik. He turned 11. He is a grown up boy. He understands his responsibilities. We are very proud of both - Shoumik and Shauank

Science nite out at the GIIS school

posted Feb 1, 2010 8:01 PM by Sachin Dabir   [ updated Feb 1, 2010 8:30 PM ]

Its Friday evening, schools is over but the kids are all excited to stay back and looking happy. What was the occassion? usually kids are eager to go home specially on Fridays so what was different today.

Today was science nite out at the GIIS school in Singapore

Children from standard 3 to 9 were showing their science projects. They all were excited to display their projects and see what their friends and seniors have done. Parents were not far behind. In fact the participation of parents was so overwhelming that they were as enthusiastic as the children.

To be frank it was the involvement of the parents that made most of the projects successful, so in many ways it was their skills on the show. But the effect of parent's involvement and their initiative had rubbed off on the children, they were equally responsive and happy to be part of it.

This science nite out would have done really great for the children's outlook and interest in science. I could feel the same in Shoumik and Shaunak. Though Shaunak did not take part, he was equally curious to see various projects. There were other gains of the projects - such as explaining the project (improving communications skills), answering questions (listening and analysing) and crises management ( something or the other always goes wrong on the 11th hour, how to "manage" that).

Apart from these visible things, most important thing this would have done is to enhance the children's bonding with their parents. I can definitely say that building this project helped entire family to come together away from the TV and computer games. It was a quality time.

Thank you school.

Sankranti

posted Jan 19, 2010 11:00 PM by Sachin Dabir   [ updated Feb 3, 2010 7:23 AM ]

This is the month of January.
This month one important development takes place in the nature.
Sun starts its Northward journey. (or the northern hemisphere of earth starts getting sunlight for more amount of time). I find this phenomena very important. In my opinion we all should use this day to embark on the Northward journey. This day should be more important for starting any work so that exactly 6 months later or 12 months later we can review it.

We had a nice Sankranti celebration program.
Shaunak told the story very nicely. He loves to tell stories. Only thing that he was more conscious and hence little apprehensive. But his confidence level and story telling technique was wonderful. He does not hesitate to improvise if he forgets the exact words. I find this quality really important. Because this shows your comfort level with story and with audience.

Shoumik sang a song. I was surprised to note that his voice quality is really good. He needs to work on Sur. But his ability to sing in "Taal" and with good voice quality was revelation to me.

Amita spoke very nicely about the Sankranti its importance from earth's movement and connected well with Vivekanand's teachings. She spoke for 15 mins and that too in Hindi. I was also pleasantly surprised to hear such a clear non-urdu / non-zee tv types Hindi. It was Amita's first attempt in public speaking in Hindi. Her speech was admired for thoughts and flow and good language.
